Before Mir Shams-ud-Din, Iraqi Khawaja Noorbakhsh visited Kargil and gave many Islamic sermons. Kargil is mostly inhabited by Shia Muslims and Aga is called the religious head and preacher. This is why Kargil is called the land of Aga.

According to the 2011 census, the population of Muslims in Kargil is 76.87 percent. The population of Hindus in Kargil is 7.34 percent. Apart from this, 14.29 percent people follow Buddhism, 0.43 percent people follow Christianity. 0.83 percent people follow Sikhism, 0.02 percent people follow Jainism. In 1979, Kargil became a separate district in Ladakh region. It was separated from the former Leh district.
